Ways to Motivate Yourself to Workout

Nowadays, people have been getting busier and busier because of school, work and even because of social life and as a result, sometimes you find yourself caught in a web and don't know how to escape.

You have probably seen your parents come home after work, cook a quick meal, and after dinner, turn on the TV to binge watch a show to simply relax while eating their favorite junk food.

You might even recognize this behavior in yourself, or you might have heard a friend or even a colleague tell you that this is their after school/work routine.

It is alright to have a couple of days to relax your body and muscles, but if your goals and desires are to see results, change your lifestyle for the better, and become a healthier version of yourself by being physically more active and you've been asking yourself these questions:

How do I start?

Where do I start?

How do I motivate myself to get off the couch?

How do I make time for it?

You came to the perfect place to have all your questions answered!

I myself sometimes struggle to find time and motivation to get up and do some exercises although these helped a lot:

  1. Time Management & Planning: Once you manage your time and plan out your day by writing a "To Do" List, everything will become more clear, making you aware of what you need to do and when you have free time to fit in a small workout.

  2. Start small!: Start small, if you are new to working out, do not overdue it! Take it step by step and do exercises that target the muscles you want to activate. Never push too hard during the first couple of weeks because it will burn you out very fast.

  3. Goal Setting: Goal setting is important, write down realistic goals that you want to achieve each month, either in a journal, or by using your Notes app so you have easy access to it. Keep track of it!

  4. Meal Prep: Nothing makes you lose weight faster than exercising, but if you do not eat healthy, meaning the portions that are recommended to keep the process of that dream body developing, you won't see the results which you are trying to achieve. This does not mean that you have to go on a strict diet either. It means that you need to make sure that all the carbs, vegetables, fruits, grains, vitamins and minerals meet the required proportions.

  5. Find an Exercise YOU Enjoy!: To keep your workout routine consistent, find an exercise you enjoy. That can be cardio (swimming, running, biking), strength building, aerobics, balance training, endurance, flexibility, moderate intensive exercises or vigorous exercises. It's important that physical activity does not turn into a "must do task", but rather transform into a passion.

  6. Notice How You Feel Afterwards: It is indeed hard to get up off your butt to be active for 20-30 minutes a day, but if there's no pain, there's no gain. Imagine the small time you dedicate towards a physical activity to see your OWN progress. After a workout you will feel much happier, productive, and proud. Knowing that you did something a little challenging and accomplished it successfully will be the best reward!

  7. Reward Yourself: After you successfully finished 1 week or maybe 2 weeks of working out constantly and eating better, reward yourself with a little treat. Go out with friends to celebrate the start of this journey or the progress of it. You can treat yourself by getting a massage to relax your body and mind, get some ice cream, or anything that you would like!

  8. Rest Days!: Rest days are very important! Your muscles need time to heal their tissue to progress and grow stronger. In the meantime, you can spend time on doing other things you enjoy!

  9. Music Choice: As you may have read in my previous blog, music strongly affects your mood. Music when you workout is what will help you push through it and keep you going, especially if you listen to up-beat, motivational songs. For reference, here are my 2 favorite playlists when working out:

  1. Gym Clothes (bonus): We all know that the gym or the small street in your neighborhood is not a runway show, but wearing the right pair of shoes and outfit will definitely make your job easier. I recommend you wear something that fits your body type and that you like, because at the end, looking good at the gym will definitely boost your confidence as well!

This is my favorite workout set, super comfortable and stretchy!
